Join LLILAS Benson for a half-day workshop led by Jesse Gainer (Curriculum & Instruction, Texas State University) and Nancy Valdez-Gainer (AISD language arts specialist) that will open the door to integrating Latinx children’s literature in the classroom. The first half of the workshop will explore the theoretical foundations of the use of Latinx literature in classrooms. As we delve into theories of literacy research, participants will engage in dialogue to answer the question of why it is necessary to use Latinx children's literature for literacy development of our students.
The second half of the workshop will put theory into practice. Participants will engage in hands-on/interactive practices using Latinx children's literature to nurture young readers and writers in elementary classrooms. We will engage with mini-lessons from reading-writing workshop that utilize theoretically grounded practices.

Resources include such as book lists, websites, and concrete ideas to implement in the literacy classroom
